About the name Tegemea
The name Tegemea was chosen with deep personal and philosophical significance. It encapsulates the founder’s journey, values, and vision. The word “Tegemea” in Kiswahili means “to rely on, to trust, to depend on”—a concept that connects meaningfully with the founder’s own middle name, Mwesigye, which carries a similar meaning in his native language.
The Inspiration
The inspiration behind the name Tegemea can be traced back to 1988, when Nathan arrived in Tanzania to study political science. The very first Kiswahili phrase he encountered in the lecture room was “Ujamaa na Kujitegemea”—socialism and self-reliance. It was a vision promoted by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania. Nathan was immediately drawn to Nyerere’s powerful philosophy of building a just, equitable society based on self-reliance, dignity, and shared wealth. That concept of a self-sustaining, people-centered economy became a lifelong source of inspiration for nathan.

Later, Nathan came to appreciate the deeper meaning of Kujitegemea—“to rely on oneself”—and realized its resonance with his own identity. His middle name Mwesigye was a gift from his grandfather, who had shortened it from Tumwesigye (“let us trust”). His grandfather, whom he deeply loved and admired, played a foundational role in shaping his early understanding of wealth and sustainability. In 1970, when Nathan was only five years old, his grandfather gifted him with a cow—an act that planted the seed of an enduring commitment to agriculture and generational wealth creation. Remarkably, Nathan still keeps cows from that original lineage, a living legacy of that profound gesture.
While his parents introduced him to formal education, it was his grandfather who introduced him to wealth creation, rooted in the land and the values of patience, productivity, and self-reliance. Tegemea Holdings (U) Ltd is a continuation of that legacy. It is both a tribute to the vision of Nyerere, the deep love and care of his parents, the wisdom of his grandfather, and the support of the community that has sustained him over the years.
Through Tegemea Holdings, Nathan seeks to promote sustainable investment in agriculture, agro-processing, value addition, and integrated rural development—always guided by the principles of trust, self-reliance, and community empowerment. True to its name, Tegemea represents reliability, with every product carefully developed through thoughtful selection, hard work, and a deep commitment to quality—making them dependable, trusted, and worthy of the communities and clientele they serve.
